Schisandra Berry History

The lovely art of gardening!

Schisandra berry can be seen used back in Ancient China. Unfortunately no specific dates are found. It is known by many names of which some are “Chinese Magnolia Vine”, “Northern Schisandra” or “Five Flavor Fruit”!

The berry is native to Northern China, Russia and parts of Korea. It grows in a creeping vine with beautiful red berries that bring a pop to any garden! They are a five flavor fruit – sweet, sour, bitter, pungent, & salty.

Throughout history the berry has been used for many things, but especially to combat fatigue. Chinese folklore even says schisandra can “calm the heart and quiet the spirit.” Let’s dive deep into the science based health benefits, or as we like to describe it…MAGIC!

Schisandra Berry Magic

Plants respond to stress much like humans do. They release hormones when reacting to an issue. This makes them great for us to consume when dealing with stress, because they carry the mechanisms that allow us to control our reactions!

Although Schisandra chinensis has been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for centuries, western medicine has yet to really embrace the power of these berries.

There are many resources that provide great information about the health benefits. Here is what makes this berry so great!

Look at all those benefits!

  • Schisandra is referred to as “adaptogenic,” as coined by holistic doctor I. I. Brekhman – to refer to any herb that has a normalizing action. What is high is lowered and what is low is raised in the body.
  • Schisandra has been used for centuries to help people get a restful night of sleep. The reduction of adrenal fatigue symptoms can help people with sleeping issues. Another awesome study discovered that it promotes sedative effects, while having effects on the GABA, dopamine, & serotonin receptors to promote a state of well-being.
  • Schisandra prevents chemicals from damaging the liver. By providing direct support and nutrients to the liver cells, the liver is able to function properly. Liver protection and performance enhancing effects have also been demonstrated in human clinical studies.
  • Vivo (within the living) and vitro (in a lab) have shown hepatoprotective, antioxidant, antiproliferative & chemopreventive, anti-inflammatory, cardioprotective, and antimicrobial effects.

These studies created awareness about this berry in the U.S and is now sold for its adaptogenic effects. Its adaptogenic effects are just the beginning…. Since the 1950s, numerous clinical trials have been conducted that show improvement in activities requiring concentration, coordination, & endurance…they also demonstrated a reduction in fatigue, an increase in accuracy and work quality, and antidepressant activity.
